Cloud computing is a multi-tiered model of computer services storage where the virtualized data is stored on multiple virtual servers, also called as clouds, on the internet. The cloud servers are typically rented or leased by a service provider. The virtual data resides on servers that are not located on a client's local machine. This has many advantages including reduced IT costs for businesses that do not have an onsite IT department and access to the internet.

The benefits of cloud-based services include better system administration, flexibility of provisioning applications, cost savings, reduced IT staff resources, easy accessibility to critical applications and enhanced business continuity. A major advantage is the easy availability of application software. This is because the application software is stored on servers that are on the cloud and can easily be accessed by any user, with internet connection. Another advantage of cloud storage infrastructure is that it can provide disaster recovery that includes recovery of data and application settings in the case of server failure.

Encryption of the data stored on the servers can be done using any encryption algorithm. When you rent cloud storage services, the provider encrypts the data before storage. Depending on your requirements, you may need encryption of data that is stored on the internet or what is needed when the application software is installed and running on the client machines. Data duplication, redundancy, and disaster recovery are some other important characteristics of cloud storage systems.
